Nyamba Buru Yawuru Limited (NBY) is Yawuru’s development and investment company and is charged with the responsibility to generate long term income for the Yawuru community. The not-for-profit company has interests in a range of areas including property development, pastoral and agricultural, hospitality and construction.
Working with partners and joint ventures, NBY drives prosperity for the benefit of the Yawuru Community and is committed to a vision of an inclusive and sustainable future which empowers Yawuru and other Aboriginal people to become active and prosperous participants in the regional economy.
NBY has a leadership role in partnership with industry and government to transform the regional economy from its current reliance on public outlays to a dynamic growth-focused economy with strong connections to Asia and the rest of Northern Australia.
The Yawuru Futures paper is a policy framework for development that connects the Yawuru values to development that will benefit not only the local community but also connects to northern Australian development, empowering Indigenous native title holders and others to capitalise on the strengths of the region.
Yawuru traditional cultural values and practices are embedded in NBY’s mission which promotes a quadruple bottom lined approach that is centred on the Yawuru philosophy of ‘mabu liyan’.
The NBY Board of Directors
NBY Board of Directors brings together an experienced and diverse group of people with expertise in business, law, investment and enterprise development. There are five Yawuru Board members and two Independent Directors. The Board works collaboratively with both the NBY Executive and the PBC Board as the community’s representatives to develop sustainable economic returns that will ensure long term prosperity for the Yawuru commuity, based on the Yawuru values.

The Yawuru people are the traditional owners of the lands and waters in and around Rubibi (the town of Broome) from Bangarangara to the yalimban (south) to Wirrjinmirr (Willie Creek) to the guniyan (north), and banu (east) covering Roebuck Plains and Thangoo pastoral leases, in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia.
The Yawuru people are the native title holders of the Western Australian town of Broome, including land and sea in and around the town, Roebuck Plains Station, Conservation Estate land as well as the Yawuru Indigenous Protected Area.
Yawuru is committed to a vision of an inclusive and sustainable economy and enabling Yawuru and other Aboriginal people to become active and prosperous participants in the region. The NBY vision incorporates commercial success with the renaissance of Yawuru cultural values and practices, embodied in the philosophy of ‘mabu liyan’ (good spirit) which is a holistic understanding of positive wellbeing that incorporates personal, social and environmental aspects that contribute to a good life.
