Training and Employment
NBY is committed to supporting Yawuru and Indigenous Youth achieve their training and employment goals and have a number of programs that improve work and training outcomes for both Yawuru and non-Yawuru youth.
Through NBY’s partnership arrangements with Shell Prelude and the Department of Jobs & Small Business, we activate Broome’s human capital through assisting our clients to gain sustainable employment, to realise a life free from the cycle of intergenerational welfare dependency.
Warrmijala Murrgurlayi (Rise up to Work), Sustainable Employment Program
NBY partners with Shell to deliver the social investment program Warrmijala Murrgurlayi Rise up to Work which offers pre-employment and vocational training to increase the positive social impact on the local community.
It offers opportunities for Yawuru and other Aboriginal people to gain skills through work readiness, vocational training and job placements and has potential for meaningful career pathways that will allow participants to engage in Broome’s future.

Transition to Work (TtW) is a federally funded employment service, through the Department of Jobs and Small Business, to support young people aged 15-24 on their journey to employment. The service provides intensive case-management support to improve the work-readiness of young people and support them to achieve their employment and education goals. The TtW Program operates collaboratively with NBY’s Warrmijala Murrgurlayi (Rise up to Work), to provide participants with culturally integrated pre and post-employment support.
NBY delivers the Australian Government’s TtW service in Broome. As an Aboriginal organisation we understand cultural appropriateness, and we work to ensure good Liyan (feeling) is achieved to ensure a smooth transition into employment.
Young people receive intensive pre-employment support to help them understand what is expected in the workplace and develop the skills, attitudes and behaviours expected by employers.
If you are aged between 15 and 24, we at Nyamba Buru Yawuru (NBY) want to help you find a job and keep it.
Our experienced team provide practical support to develop work readiness by:
- welcoming you to our team at NBY – the place of the Yawuru; Broome where we understand cultural appropriateness and have created a safe place where mabu liyan is strong;
- assisting you in furthering your education, i.e. school, Tafe or other registered training organisation (RTO);
- connecting you with work experience opportunities;
- identifying employment opportunities in the area.
For employers we deliver high quality services to ensure young people entering employment meet employers' needs and are well supported to settle into a job.

Who is eligible for Transition to Work?
Transition to Work is for young people aged 15 to 24 years. It is targeted to early school leavers and young people who have experienced difficulty transitioning from education to employment. All young Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people are eligible.
Eligibility will also depend on a young person’s circumstances, including whether the young person:
- has been awarded a Year 12 certificate or Certificate III
- has been employed within the last six months
- receives an income support payment such as Youth Allowance
- is currently participating in another employment service including job active.
